March 26: Heaven's Gate

On March 26, 1997, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult in San Diego donned matching Nike shoes and committed suicide by consuming vodka and phenobarbitol-laden applesauce. They believed that in dying they would somehow be transported to a spaceship concealed by the passing Hale-Bopp comet, escaping Satan's impending destruction of the earth.
